Antioch College honors gun murderer Mumia Abu-Jamal

I originally posted this to the newsgroup talk.politics.guns on 29 April 2000.

Mumia Abu-Jamal was the honored commencement speaker today at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Mumia's speech had to be delivered by audiotape. He is on Death Row, awaiting execution for gunning down the Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981.

Mumia was found wounded at the murder scene, with bullets from the slain officer's gun in him. Faulkner was murdered shortly after he attempted to arrest Mumia's brother for driving recklessly. An eyewitness saw Mumia shoot Faulkner, and the badly mangled bullets in Faulkner's body showed rifling patterns similar to Mumia's gun.

Why is this on topic? Because Antioch College students, faculty, and administrators are intensely "politically correct" and are very much in favor of so-called gun-control laws. Apparently they are anti-gun but pro gun-murders.

I was there and it was very sad. On one side of crowd control tape were Faulkner's widow, hundreds of grieving police officers, and a few non-police locals like me. On the other side were hundreds of Antioch students noisily celebrating graduation. Occasionally a masked student would come by to insult us and try to start a fight. Appropriately, the dividing tape was a thin blue line of plastic ribbon.

At least one NRA member was there to protest Antioch honoring a gun murderer, but I didn't see anybody from Handgun Control Incorporated. I wonder why?
