Her son was shot dead, in the bright light of a winter afternoon, on a day when much of the city celebrated the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

A week later, there was still not a word in the newspapers or on television news. There were no answers from D.C. police. Barbara Lipscomb was beyond sad. She was hollow. When she felt anything at all, it was rage.

Lipscomb knew her son was in danger. Le'Pierre Clemons Sr. was the youngest of her four children and the one who lived closest to the edge. She knew he had quit high school. She knew he had been in trouble with police. Though not convicted as an adult, he had been arrested on charges of cocaine possession, marijuana possession and carrying a handgun without a license.
